Woodstock is under contract with Flock Safety for 12 Falcon “alpr” cameras. This one makes lucky number 13.
It's not clear if we're paying for this one or just providing our data for funsies. If we are paying for it, it's not on the books under Flock Safety, and that is concerning.
We’ve reached out to WPD Police Chief John Lieb, Mayor Michael Turner, Woodstock City Council, and Woodstock City Manager Roscoe Stelford for comment. Here are the questions I posed to Chief Lieb:
Is this one of the Falcon cameras that Woodstock is under contract for with Flock Safety? I’m under the impression that Woodstock leases 12 cameras. It’s this an additional camera or did this one get repurposed from somewhere else in town? If it is an additional camera are taxpayers paying for it?
What’s the purpose here? Why do you have a need for a mobile license plate camera? Are you targeting a high crime area? Are you tracking a specific threat?
Are you combining license plate reads with radar scans? Is this being used for traffic enforcement?
